Financial management intern for a fraternal organization is taking an in-depth look at the world of debt and how it can impact your finances.
Financial management intern Matt Farrar took an internship with a national fraternal lodge and recently graduated from the program.
His goal was to understand how to manage your debt better and understand the types of money and credit cards that work for people in their 20s.
Matt Fargar is the first financial manager at a national Fraternal Order of Police fraternity.
Matt and his team of 10 interns worked from 8am to 4pm on Monday and Tuesday nights, with breaks in between.
They talked about the challenges of debt, how they came to work for a fraternity, and the benefits of investing in your savings and investments.
Matt Farrad says that the biggest challenge for most people is how to pay off their debt.
He says the hardest part is when you’re in a tight financial situation.
Farram said the main thing he learned was that if you want to avoid a debt trap, pay off all your debt.
Matt explains the different types of debt that he’s seen in fraternities.
One type is called a loan.
This debt is often created by you when you buy a home, a car, or even a business.
Matt says if you get a loan, you can only repay the interest on the loan.
When you default on your loan, the loan automatically becomes delinquent.
When that happens, the interest rate will rise and it’s hard to pay back the debt.
Farrar says the biggest downside to paying off a loan is that you can end up with a debt load that’s more than what you can handle.
You may need to pay more in interest, fees, and penalties.
Matt recommends paying off your credit card first.
Fargam recommends paying it off first.
You can always pay it off later if you can’t.
If you’re like me, you may have a loan balance that you’re unable to pay.
You want to try to pay that off as quickly as possible.
Farge says if your credit is good, you don’t need to worry about paying that debt off.
If you’re struggling, you might need to get help to pay it down.
You’ll also want to consider putting money aside to help pay off that debt.
FARRAR says that if your interest rate is over 6%, it’s likely that your loan will end up costing you more in fees than the amount of money you’re saving.
Matt and his colleagues also discussed ways to reduce your debt without having to pay interest.
You might have to defer a monthly payment or defer payments in certain situations.
If your interest rates rise, you’ll need to put some money aside.
FARMERS ASSISTANCE is one of the organizations offering this kind of financial assistance.
Matt says if someone in your life has a medical condition, you should consider getting a health insurance plan.
